8th question

My own Entry

All the stories are related to Christianity, and also the most common, but the most significant aspect is faith and hope. As I mentioned about the hope below, this story takes a lot of hope to survive from the island. Ralph survived because he had 1% of hope that he could survive from the island, and from the war. For example, people in our school keep say that we could never beat SAHS in basketball. They keep say that we will lose, forever. However, I was on the contrary. I believed that we could win those black, white, and other citizen. When we played with them, at the away game, we had preety good result, which was 12 points difference. I was pretty satisfy with that because God watched us playing our best. Anyway, the last book I read, which was "Fahrenheit 451," it had to do with loving their enemy, and also you have to make a goal that you want to achieve, and work for that goal, that God had planned for you, before you were born. I mentioned this so many times, that in order to achieve the goal, you need to struggle, and if you go through the struggles you had, and you succeeded, then you achieved your goal. So, all the books are related to christianity.

7th question

Are there any settings in this novel which you have found to be beautiful? or disturbing? or memorable? Describe these settings and comment on why they were meaningful to you.

The setting was placed on the island. After the plain crashed, kids remained on the unknown island. The setting of the story is actually beautiful because it happened at the island, and I think every island has beautiful scene. However, the situation happening on the island is very cruel and nasty. Since there were several antogonist around Ralph, Simon died from two kids, the first kid died from the fire, and Piggy died by falling down from the cliff. What's getting worse was the soldier came to the island. Even though the kids were from the other country, the soldier just kill them, no matter what. Fortunately, Ralph and his friend almost got exterminated.

6th question

Please choose one passage from the novel that is significant to you. Why is this passage meanigful? Please type it into one of your entries and comment on what you think about the pessage.

5th question

What is the mood of this novel? Do you find this novel saddens you in anyway? why?

The mood of the story has various moods, such as dreadful, very sad, and so confusing. In every chapter and every situation, the mood changes frequently. In the beginning of the story, on the contrary, was enjoyable, with saddens mood. As the story goes, since the setting of the book is war period, it's reall dreadful and scary for kids, who live without their families. Worse aspect is that some kids die by natural disaster, like fire, one guy got killed from his companion, and Piggy fell down from the cliff. These sorts of things happened to these kids because Jack and Roger became an antagonist in the story. Other kids, who survived from the island must be really sad because they have to live by themselves, with cause of no family. In my opinion, I think everyone with families need to be thankful. We can live in warm house, we could eat nice food, we could study, and we could make lots of friends. Ralph could be adapted by family who live without any kids in their house.

4th question

What is the climax of this novel? What happens? How do the events of this novel make you feel?

I'll explain about the climax of this novel. Different aspects that Jack and Ralph had in mind brought big conflicts. Not only to Jack and Ralph, but also to other kids. Furthermore boys began to take sides. Simon knew about the monster, which lived next to a signal fire. Therefore he tried to tell the facts to the other boys that it was not a monster but it was the dead body of human. However the time that he came out from the forest it was too dark for other boys to notice that it was Simon. After all he was killed by them. After that accident Ralph brings the shell and attempt to say “I have the shell listen to me!” Nevertheless some boys in Jack's side killed the Ralph's companion, Piggy, and broke the shell as well. Ralph confused for his close friend's death. Plus he had no one advising him anymore. Ralph was scared. Jack thought with his group to get rid of Ralph. When Ralph realized that Jack was going to kill him he ran away to the safe region. It made me to imagine that I was being in that situation and I could feel big tension. Also I felt like I to hide somewhere like Ralph had to hide from Jack. I thought this part was the climax of this book.It made me feel sorry for the boys who were left in an uninhabited island without any guideline or any help from adults. They had to maintain their lives until they were rescued. Also I sympathetic for the fact that had to inevitably have variety of aspects to survive, which caused big problem between Jack and Ralph.

3rd question

Who are the main characters in the novel? Do you like them? Why or why not? What is special about them? What do they reveal asbout the universal human experience?

Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy and other boys are all main characters.Ralph tries to lead kids by using the shell, which represents democracy. He worked up with every boys and listened to their opinions and especially Piggy's advice. Ralph had ability to listen to the boys. I he is true leader. I liked Ralph because he was true leader and possessed ability to listen to kids.Piggy represents abundant of knowledge, philosophic ideas, and the main follower of Ralph. He never works and only let other boys to use his eyeglass, which symbolizes civilized invention. Piggy was great assistant to Ralph and I was impressed when he was in Ralph’s side when every one was in Jack’s.Jack who always disagrees with Ralph’s opinion desires to hunt. He wants power and abuses his power such as dealing operation with kids to kill Ralph. He becomes cruel and aggressive as the novel progress. He represents uncivilized people. Actually I didn’t really like his attitude toward Ralph but because of him I could know what is real human wickedness was.Simon is the first boy to realize the beast and to have ability to talk with LORD OF THE FLIES. Also he represents a prophet or a martyr. As you can see in the New Testament some prophets were dead in a way Simon was killed by the boys. I felt so sorry for his death but I was so curioused about his ability to talk with LORD OF THE FLIES, which I couldn’t understand at first. (Rachel Kim)

2nd question

Are there any current situations in the world that relate to the novel? what are they, and how do they relate? Does the novel shed any light on how current situations could be resolved or "fixed"?

I think this situation is similar to a war, between the United States and Iraq. This happened because the Iraq sent a suicide airplain, destroyed the twin towers in New York. As a result, hundreds of people inside and people outside, who stayed close to a twin tower were dead. After that, the United States got so mad, and they begun the war. If these kids don't have manners and repect each other, they might cause a war, or else, they're going to hate each other and act like soldiers fighting between United States and Iraq. Also, the setting of the story is a war time. These kids on the island are like orphans, who live without their family, and feel lonely. However, they are not lonely at all. They decide, their own job, kindly, but Jack becomes an antagonist in the story. Becuase this happened, the disaster begun.

1st question

What is the major theme of this novel? Why is this theme important to a teenager living in 2007?

The major them of the novel is with a little hope inside you can escape from the darkness, and in bad situation. In the book, Ralph and his other friends were stuck in the island, during the war period. It will be really difficult for them to survive without any adults around them, they just have to stay by themselves. Without any respect to each other, this might be rather you die or you live. If you respect each other more, then there are hight percentage of having more faith in you. When I was in 2nd grade, I went to Pusan with my family and cousins. My mom sent me to supermarket and told me to buy some 1.5L of water. So I bought 3 bottles of water. While I was going down to the super market with an elevator, it stopped and I stayed their for 20 minutes, bymyself. I cried like I was baby. I called the security, and waited for 20 minutes. I believed that they can take me out very fast. The inside was pretty dark, that I felt like some monster would come out. 20 minutes later, resueres took me out. I was so happy to see outside again. Ralph is in same case as I was.
